Éducation, Éducation Populaire sharing the Open Source experience on math courseOpen Source in Taiwan

Yen-lung Tsai is the Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, National Chengchi University (NCCU), Taiwan. Professor Tsai’s research interests are Algebraic Geometry, Tropical Geometry, and Neural Networks. He loves to find new possibilities of using computers to teach Mathematics. His idea of Mathematics learning with computer tools becomes a plan called "Penguin Project." During the summer vacation last year, Professor Tsai worked with OpenFoundry team to deliver a training course on entry-level Linux administration. In the following semesters, tools and skills such as Maxima, LaTeX, Python, jsMath, are also thought. In this discussion, we will talk about why the project come along, how to connect the tools and skills to students’ courses. Also we will discuss the advantage using Open Source tools, and what we have learned from the project. Those students who learn about open source tools and skills can be mentors for junior learners. We seek for further opportunity to empower these young talents. They can explore the geek culture and tradition through hands-on and interactive experience.
